Our insider tip: The 2 most beautiful walking routes in the Arlberg
The signposted hiking trails in the Arlberg region cover around 350 kilometres and wind their way through stunning and picturesque Alpine landscapes, magnificent mountains and breathtaking alpine meadows. There is much to marvel at along these trails: endless forests, streams that sometimes murmur softly and sometimes rush impetuously, crystal-clear lakes and the ‘Gipslöcher’ nature reserve, which is regarded as a sight of interest and a natural spectacle.
The infrastructure in the Arlberg region is excellent. Walkers can use various modes of transport to reach the starting points of the different hiking trails in comfort, including:
- Hiking buses
- Cable cars
- Chairlifts
Thanks to this infrastructure, the region offers flexible transport options, making it much easier for walkers to find a suitable car park. Below, we at Intersport Arlberg show you the two most beautiful walking trails in the Arlberg region.
1. Winter hike in Oberlech
This route is accessible from December to March and is therefore ideal for a winter hike. The difficulty level is moderate, although the route does require a fair amount of stamina. You should allow around 2.5 hours for the 6.2-kilometre route.
The parish church by the post office in Lech – which, incidentally, is well worth a visit in its own right – is the starting point for this route. From the parish church, the route leads to the Landbrugg in the Strass district. Landbrugg is a road bridge between the Lech-Oberlech mountain railway and the Schlosskopfbahn. Opposite St Martin’s Church in the Strass district, you’ll find the start of the compacted snow track, which winds its way through the mountain forest in hairpin bends.
As soon as you reach the ‘Burg’ area, you’ll need to cross a junction of the ski runs. Once you’ve reached the top station of the cable car, continue walking uphill until you reach the uppermost hotel complex, the Schlössle hotel complex. At the end of the complex, between two ski runs, a hiking trail begins which, after a few minutes’ walk, leads you to the Tannegg viewpoint.
The return route first takes you back to the Schlössle hotel complex. This time, however, turn left at the ‘Goldener Berg’ hotel and then, via a bend leading to the Berg plot, you’ll return to Landbrugg and the starting point.
2. Summer hike to Lake Zürs
This route is easy and therefore also suitable if you’re planning a hike with your family or with older people. It starts in Zürs am Arlberg, leads to Lake Zürs and from there back to the starting point via the Seekopfbahn cable car and the hiking bus. The walking route covers a distance of approximately three kilometres and takes just under two hours to complete. The route is accessible from June to October and is therefore suitable for summer, late summer and autumn walks.
The starting point is the Rüfliplatz hiking car park. From here, you can take the hiking bus to the Trittkopf stop. From the Trittkopf stop, you walk to the centre of Zürs and, following the signposts, continue towards the Flexen Pass. 200 metres past the roundabout, turn right onto a farm track leading to Lake Zürs. After an hour, you’ll reach the highest point of the walk, which offers a breathtaking view of Lake Zürs. A hilly path leads down to Lake Zürs itself. On the way back, take the Seekopfbahn cable car to return to the valley. At the Seekopfbahn cable car station, there’s a bus stop for the hiking buses, which will take you back to the starting point.
