Key information at a glance

  • On many routes, you can use the mountain cable cars to make the climb easier.
  • Take enough provisions with you or plan your routes so that you pass a mountain hut along the way.
  • Whether you’re a beginner or a pro – the right safety kit, including a helmet, is essential.

Route 1: The Arlberg Trail for beginners

From St. Anton, you can take the Galzigbahn and the Vallugabahn I up to the Arlberg, where an exciting circular route covering a good six kilometres awaits you. Along the way, you can stop off at the Ulmer Hütte for a break and some refreshments. And if, after the trail – which takes a good hour – you’re still up for more, you can easily cycle down into the valley from there.

Route 2: The Lech Valley Loop for advanced cyclists

Around Lech you’ll find a wide variety of cycle paths and trails. This route starts in the town and heads west through the Lech Valley to Zug, continuing along the River Lech and finally following the Spullerbach stream round the Schafberg. Whilst the path is well-maintained at the start, it soon narrows into a narrow track with challenging sections.

In the south, after a good hour’s ride, you’ll reach Spullersee, which offers a welcome chance to cool off. You’ll then head back to Zug along the eastern flank of the mountain and from there follow the River Lech. The waterfall in the woods just before Zug is definitely worth a short detour. Advanced cyclists can cover the 25 kilometres with 600 metres of elevation gain in around two hours.

Route 3: The Alpe Rauz loop for experienced cyclists

The climb towards the Albonagrat begins at Alpe Rauz. Alternatively, you can start directly in St. Anton and head via St. Christoph to the circular route at an altitude of just under 2,000 metres. This route is around 13 kilometres long and takes you past numerous beautiful mountain streams and small lakes. At the same time, you can enjoy the views of the surrounding mountain panorama.

Practical tips and equipment hire at Intersport Arlberg

Your safety should always be your top priority when mountain biking. That’s why every mountain bike should be accompanied by a suitable helmet. Breathable clothing keeps you warm but also cools you down when you start to sweat. Always check the latest weather forecast in advance and bear in mind that it’s often significantly colder on the mountain than in the valley – and, of course, there’s the wind chill to consider as well.

At Intersport Arlberg, we offer an on-site equipment hire service in St. Anton. Here you can hire a modern mountain bike if you’d prefer to leave your own bike at home.
